Presentation of the research centre

224 employees work on research projects including 80 permanent research professors,
13 employer-hosted staff and

98 Doctoral students

One of the two missions of the Ecole Centrale de Lille is research.  Research is omnipresent in an engineering graduate school through its teaching staff which have a combined teaching and research mission. As researchers, our professors’ main goal is to explore the limits of human knowledge. They are therefore constantly up to date with the latest developments in their fields of speciality.
If you are a business you will find more information on the ‘Research and Innovation Projects’ page
All research carried out in the School is also a source of innovation for our partner companies.
The research teams’ missions in the School are to advance knowledge and innovate. Indeed, the School is a natural partner of any firm which wants to create value and innovation. Companies turn knowingly to research laboratories for their own growth.

Accordingly, the School’s research activities enable it to extend its influence abroad and to place itself as a major player in research at the service of the economic world.

Its laboratories cover a wide range of themes in line with the multi-disciplinary nature of its teaching :

  •  Industrial Computing
  •   Electronics
  •   Civil Engineering
  •   Nanotechnology / Nano Electro-Mechanical Systems
  •   Industrial Engineering
  •   Acoustics
  •   Business Modelling
  •   Process Engineering
  •   Mechanics of Materials
  •   Metallurgy
  •   Métallurgie
  •   Electrical Engineering
  •   Information Processing
  •   Automatic Control

Here are a few examples of projects being carried out in our laboratories :

- REALCAT -  UCCS laboratory

The research work of Michel Stanislas’ team on aerodynamic drag on transport vehicles (planes, trains, automobiles …) is being carried out around an aerodynamic wind tunnel, the only one of its kind in the world, which is located on the Villeneuve d’Ascq campus. The work draws extensively on a new and modern approach, thus ensuring its impact abroad. The objective is to improve the modeling of airflow over the body of a vehicle and thus to enable a better prediction of aerodynamic drag according to shape. Work in collaboration with the aeronautics industry (Airbus, Dassault …).

- LIA NANOTECH – IEMN laboratory

- Aerodynamic drag on transport vehicles – LML laboratory
The RESEAUX team from L2EP has developed research work to find new and additional means to improve management of the electrical network in the face of an increasing number of wind turbines being connected which produce electricity intermittently and in a way which is difficult to predict. Work in collaboration with EDF, ERDF, RTE…

- Electrical Networks – L2EP laboratory
The RESEAUX team from L2EP has developed research work to find new and additional means to improve management of the electrical network in the face of an increasing number of wind turbines being connected which produce electricity intermittently and in a way which is difficult to predict. Work in collaboration with EDF, ERDF, RTE…

- Test wall – Civil Engineering laboratory
The research work in Civil Engineering specializing in gas transfer from the Mechanical Laboratory in Lille has led to the construction of a test wall in order to test in real conditions the means to improve the seals of reactor buildings in nuclear power stations. Work in collaboration with EDF.
